About the award

Duško Kondor Civil Courage Award and Duško Kondor Award for Affirmation on Civil Courage were established to honor the memory of untiring and uncompromising fighters for civil courage and for the symbol of civil courage, Dusko Kondor.

Gariwo Sarajevo bestows the ‘Dusko Kondor’ award to individuals who with their deeds, ideas, commitment and personal example give voice to or affirm civil courage.

The goal of the award

The Gariwo non-governmental organization actively promotes the idea of civil courage, civil society, tolerance and non-violent resistance against conformism and civil apathy. It is for these reasons and ideals that the ‘Dusko Kondor’ Award for Civil Courage and the Affirmation of Civil Courage was established for individuals or groups who had the courage to overcome evil and negative authority, regardless of the price which they would ultimately have to pay.

The decision of the individual to make a choice and to overcome negative authority and to preserve not only their own, but also the basic human dignity of others, is in fact extraordinarily difficult but also the most magnificent decision an individual can make. To all the current and future honorees of the ‘Dusko Kondor’ Award for Civil Courage and the Affirmation of Civil Courage we wish to send a message that they are not alone and their actions in difficult times were not taken in vain. In thanking them, we see the difference between good and evil, courage and cowardice and between dignity and shame. They are symbols of and serve as examples to all generations. For the ‘Dusko Kondor’ Award for Civil Courage and the Affirmation of Civil Courage you can nominate:

  • Individuals who have demonstrated civil courage.
  • Individuals who have affirmed civil courage
  • Individuals who fight against injustice in different ways
