Dusko Kondor Civil Courage Award for 2013


Sixth March is the European Day of Remembrance for the Righteous which has been for the first time introduced in public space of BiH and region by NGO GARIWO through the recognition and presentation of people who could be considered as the righteous in our culture.

The award commemorates Duško Kondor, an uncompromising champion of civil courage, who was assassinated in his own home in Bijeljina on the 22nd of February 2007. His name has become a symbol of civil courage.

The audience was addressed by Valentin Inzko, the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina (read the speech), Stjepan Mesić, President of Republic Croatia from 2000 to 2010 (read the speech), Mary Ann Hennessey, Head of Sarajevo Office at Council of Europe (read the speech), Uwe Kitzinger CBE, President of the International Commission for Awards (read the speech) and Svetlana Broz, Director of NGO Gariwo (read the speech).


The ceremony was attended by numerous members of the diplomatic corps, politicians and workers in the non-governmental sector, dear guests from Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia and more than 1000 high school students from BiH, Croatia and Serbia.

On the ceremony were shown for the first time short films about laureates and film about Duško Kondor which are produced by NGO Gariwo.

Based on the 31 proposals received, the Commission agreed to make the awards for 2013 as follows:


Goran Čengić, Sarajevo, BiH – for civil courage, posthumuosly

Predrag Matvejević, Zagreb, Croatia – for civil courage

Nebojša Popov, Belgrade, Serbia - for civil courage

Melisa Ismičić, Novi Šeher, Bosnia and Herzegovina – for civil courage

Jelena Lovrić, Zagreb, Croatia – for affirmation of civil courage
