Dr Zlatko Hrvić, born on 20.06.1950 in Čitluk. Graduated from Medical Faculty in Sarajevo 1975. He was Director of Special Hospital for Mental Diseases Domanovići until the end of April 1992. He was the founder and the Director of the first Center for Mental health opened in BiH in Mostar. He died on 21.05.2006.

The Duško Kondor Award for Civil Courage is given to Dr Zlatko Hrvić from Mostar, posthumously, because he was aware of the risk and still expressed his civil courage:

  • In April 1992, risking his own life, as the Director of Psychiatric Hospital in Domanovići, he stayed in the hospital to protect and save 158 most serious psychiatric patients who were not capable of taking care of themselves even in case of most fundamental existential needs, and they were under attack of various military and paramilitary formations committing war crimes all over.
  • In April 1992, when former JNA and paramilitary forces occupied, mined and stopped communications, the hospital teams were prevented from going to the hospital in Domanovići, which was left without electricity and water, it was impossible to get food there, then Dr Zlatko Hrvić, together with two paramedics, who risked their own lives, managed to provide minimum quantities of water and food for the patients’ survival.
  • When after his return to Mostar, with enormous efforts he arranged evacuation of all 158 unprotected psychiatric patients from the hospital in Domanovići to Mostar on 18.04.1992, and put them in other medical institutions, thereby, saving their lives.
